Every summer, the American Motorcyclist Association hosts Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The theme this year is Rockers & Mods, and we were fortunate enough to work with the good folks at AMA in designing and illustrating an event poster and T-shirt.
As motojournalists, our goal is to creatively capture a scene with photographs that tell a story or add visual impact to a written piece. During motorcycle events and adventures, it can be a challenge to adjust for varying light, lock in a solid composition or fiddle with camera controls. There are many how-tos, articles, blogs and videos available to aspiring photogs, but a special e-book surfaced with a moto-centric approach that we had to check out. The scene found at Chicago’s Mods vs Rockers goes far beyond the cafe racer craze. Sure, the event is inspired by vintage British motorcycles and Italian metal-bodied scooters, but the curbs are endlessly lined with all types of old, custom and unique bikes. For the eighth year, the small trees and lampposts along busy Lincoln Avenue are flooded with motorcyclists and pedestrians-turned-admirers. Just seven miles from Pole Day qualifications at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 19th, motorcycle engines dominated the soundscape at Indy’s Rockers Reunion. The thumping and buzzing of over 300 4-cylinders, parallel twins, triples, old singles and screaming two-strokes confirmed the increasing popularity of this event. Check out our pics for a mere taste of the cool found at Indy’s best vintage bike gathering of the year.
