AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days: Our Top 15

If you’ve followed Good Spark Garage, you know we’re fans of the annual AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days event hosted at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, OH. In this post, we’re sharing many of our 2017 photos and the top 15 things we believe makes this a great event. Maybe we’ll see you there?

NOTE: The 2018 AMA VMD event is happening on July 6-8, 2018! This is an annual opportunity to reunite with your moto-family. It’s also a chance to ride your own bike down memory lane and see motorcycles that your family grew up riding. Jump in line early to sign up for a test ride of a brand new production bike.

Check the AMAVMD schedule for music, art, seminars and other special features happening throughout the weekend! You’ll also find multiple bike shows and collections on display in various areas of the grounds.

We guarantee you’ll see something you’ve never seen before or you’ll learn something about old bikes and old riders that you’ve never known. It’s like getting an continuing education in motorcycles. AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is also popular with families. Parents, kids, cousins, or couples…you’ll see lots of motorcycle families logging quality time here.

When we say, “Keep VMD Weird,” we mean it in a good way. From crazy vehicles to funky outfits to colorful characters, the wonderfully weird is welcome here and we love it. In addition to the interesting attendees, there’s plenty of racing to see on dirt and pavement. Trials, motocross, road race, hare scrambles, minibikes, etc. Spectators can find a shady spot to watch many classes of racing and even walk around the pits right up to the garages and team tents.

Campground Hijinks: If you’ve been to AMAVMD, you know what we mean. If you haven’t been, take a spin through the campground (not with your youngsters) late on Friday or Saturday night to see the unsanctioned festivities. Overall, the camaraderie is always evident; folks from near and far, young and old, new motorcyclists and lifelong motorcyclists all gather and enjoy talking bikes.

The ambience is top notch. Hear engines you’ve never heard of, hear racing the way it sounded decades ago, and relax to the winding down of moto sounds in the evening. At the swap meet, find that part you’ve been looking for or that accessory you didn’t know you needed at one of the biggest swaps around!

You never know what you might encounter here, but we’re certain you’ll run into random acts of fun when you least expect it. And, being one of the largest gatherings in the country for likeminded vintage motorcycle enthusiasts, it really is a special event. People will be riding, camping, racing, and spectating for three straight days all centered around old bikes.

Here are more pics we snapped during the 2017 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. A big thanks to the American Motorcycle Association for their hospitality and for putting on such a great event year after year!
